October 8, 2008 -- Beck performs with his band at United Palace Theater in Washington Heights, New York, NY.

Shooting this show was odd for a few reasons. The United Palace Theater is a large sit-down theater but photographers are allowed only to shoot from the outer aisles. We're also not supposed to be any closer to the stage than the first row of seats. There was also a film crew shooting on behalf of Beck, and strong backlighting throughout most of the set. They also turned on the house lights, for some reason that was never explained to me. Still, I think the photographs turned out nicely and I'm pleased with the results, especially since I got a few of Beck's face, unobstructed by the brim of his hat. View the full set.

I don't think I will ever get tired of photographing St. Vincent. Her set before Death Cab seemed to win over some converts, despite the part-empty theater. And the lighting was the best I've ever seen in the venue, leading to some beautifully lit shots of Annie's intensely expressive face. View the entire set on Flickr.
